Happy Fuzzy Friday everyone, hope you had a great week and have lots of fun things lined up for the weekend! Before we commence our weekly celebration of all things fuzzy this week a short Fuzzy Friday feature is necessary to recognize the passing of one of the great famous fuzzy faces known to most for being, well, really really fugly.
Before Mugly, The Chinese Crested 8 year old dog who took the title of World’s Ugliest Dog at the annual Sonoma-Marin County Fair in California in 2012, there was Elwood. Elwood, a Chinese Crested Chihuahua mix, who although was not the first to win of the title of Worlds Ugliest Dog, quickly became one of the most beloved by the public after he took home the title in 2007.
After winning the coveted title of Most Ugly in 2007, Elwood seemed to become a viral internet overnight sensation, some claiming it was just because of his most extreme ugliness, others because of his sad back story that his owner revealed to reporters after her prized pooch took home the title. Apparently Elwood was almost euthanized by the breeder she had bought him from because the breeder had thought Elwood would be, “too ugly to sell.” After the tale of Elwood’s almost early demise, according to Gawker, Elwood, “became the star of his very own children’s book, “Everyone Loves Elwood” which taught children to accept everyone, no matter their appearance.
Sadly Elwood passed away this past Thanksgiving Day at the age of eight years old. The infamous New Jersey canine died peacefully and in the arms of his loving owner Karen Quigley who said in an interview with cnn.com, “the best part was he did not suffer, he was in my arms and with me….I couldn’t be more proud that people who haven’t met him loved him…I couldn’t be more proud.” RIP Elwood, you and your fantastically fuzzy fugly mug will be greatly missed!
