I love watching the Travel Channel and the other day I came across a show I had yet to see, Adam Richman’s Best Sandwich in America.  Adam Richman’s Best Sandwich in America show selects three different sandwiches from all over the US and stacks them up against each other to see which one reigns supreme.  After Adam meets the creators of the sandwich, learns how they are made, talks to locals who love ordering them and of course does some serious taste testing, he declares a winner.  This show was where I first  learned of the famous Faidley’s Crab Cake Sandwich.  After watching Adams interview with the owners of Faidley’s in Baltimore, MD I had one thing on my mind, to attempt to replicate the infamous sandwich in the comfort of my own kitchen.

The first thing that’s so great about this recipe is it’s simplicity.  Sometimes when you try to duplicate a recipe you see on TV you realize half way through that not only do you NOT have most of the ingredients you need in your fridge, but also buying them will cost a small fortune. lump Well not the recipe for Faidley’s Crab Cake Sandwich, besides the pound of lump crab meat, most people will be happy to find they have everything they need to make this awesome sandwich already in their refrigerator at home. My guests and I gobbled up the sandwiches so quickly that I didn’t get a chance to take a picture of the finished product!!! I did however remember to take a picture of the crab cakes before they were assembled into sandwiches thank goodness!  One tip for this recipe, make sure to get the large to colossal lump crab meat because biting into one of those large pieces of lump crab meat after the sandwich is assembled is what takes this sandwich from delicious to divine!!  ENJOY!

West Coast Love Trip: Mt. Rainier-Silver Falls

On July 3rd we awoke at the Seasons Motel, located at the base of Mount Rainier, ready to hit the trails and do some hiking.  I decided it might be a good idea to check the trail conditions before heading up the mountain as I had heard that the  unseasonably cold winter, followed by a mild summer had led to slow melt off of the snow on the mountain resulting in quite a bit of washout on the hiking trails.  Well, you can imagine my surprise when I not only discovered the trail I wanted to hike that day, Comet Falls, was closed, it was closed because of SNOW!!  SNOW in JULY, I was in shock and terribly disappointed (although we did make the best of it with a quick snowball fight on our way up the mountain:))   I always believed the Comet Falls hike to be one of the most romantic and magical hikes I have ever been on and I so badly wanted to share it with John that day.

Not to be deterred by a little bump in the road I began investigating what trails we could actually hike that day without the need of snow shoes and it turned out there were very few options for us to chose from. I decided we would settle on hiking a trail I had never been on before that was at a low enough elevation we would not be trekking through snow, named Silver Falls.  When we arrived at the trail head of Silver Falls it began to rain so we popped into the visitor center for a quick peek at their displays and to grab a trail map before starting out on our woodland adventure.

We headed outside to the trail-head and it took about a whole two seconds for me to forget all about us not being able to hike to Comet Falls, suddenly overcome by the unmatchable beauty of the Pacific North West.  As John and I proceeded down the trail we stumbled upon a natural hot spring (which turned out to be his very first encounter with one) and then continued deeper and deeper into the forest, making our way along the Silver Falls trail.  I felt as though the farther into the woods we went the younger I felt, with memories of the many days I spent in my youth hiking the trails of Mt. Rainier with my family and friends, suddenly rushing back incited by the fresh smell of pine and mossy ground beneath our feet.  Although it was still raining a little as we hiked that day we stayed mostly dry, sheltered by the majestic and towering pine trees above us.  After about an hour of hiking I was a child again, jumping over fallen branches, investigating every curiosity we came across, fearlessly running down steep embankments, catching raindrops with my tongue, it was awesome.

On our way to Silver Falls we came across many creeks and rivers, including the Laughingwater Creek and as we approached the half way mark of our hike we could hear in the distance the unmistakable roar of the Ohanapecosh River tumbling over Silver Falls.  As we rounded the corner to the first viewing point, the site of Silver Falls literally took our breath away. We stood there, mesmerized by the rushing water, the cool aqua green color of the river, the overwhelming sound of the water crashing over the falls.  As we made our way down the embankment, exploring the many viewing areas around the falls time stood still, the world melted away, and for that moment it was just us and the mountain and a feeling a peace came over me that I had not felt in a very long time.

West Coast Love Trip: Portland, Oregon-Thirsty Lions and Voodoo

After leaving the Oregon Vortex we began our five hour drive to our next destination, the lovely city of Portland, Oregon.  Now as I grew up on the west coast I had visited Portland a number of times (although much changed over the last 15 years) however John, inspired by the show Portlandia, (which is a hilarious show and I would recommend it to anyone who has yet to see it and is available on Netflix) wanted to check it out before heading over towards The Seasons Motel in Morton, Washington, where we would be staying that evening.  The Seasons Motel is only a few minutes from Mt. Rainier  where we would be headed to explore the following day.  Although we were running a little behind schedule we decided a quick stop in Portland still sounded like a good plan, knowing already we would try and to spend more time there the next time we found ourselves in the area.

The sun was setting as we pulled into Portland so we decided to find a place to park quickly as possible as it was getting late and we were starving.  After passing the most very unique and impossible to miss Welcome to Portland sign, a sort of spectacle of lights with a glowing white stag at the top, we found a neighborhood that looked promising and got out of the car to start exploring, it immediately began to rain.  Rain is not something that either John or I really mind and our focus was more on searching for a place still opened where we could grab a bite to eat (being from New York you forget that not all places stay open late and by this time most in Portland had closed).  As we walked around the area we stumbled on a most spectacularly long line of people standing in the rain, waiting for what I first thought was a concert, but soon after my gaze rested on the glowing sign above their heads,  I realized they were in line for doughnuts, Voodoo Doughnuts that is.  Now, I actually had heard of Voodoo Doughnuts before that day as I tend to watch a lot of The Food Network and Travel Chanel in my downtime. It was clear from what we estimated to be a least a half hour to forty five minute wait in the line, that these doughnuts apparently live up to the hype.  We checked to see what time it would be closing and decided we would have plenty of time to swing back around after we had some dinner. We continued on our search for sustenance until we finally found a nice table at a place called The Thirsty Lion Pub& Grill.

After filling our bellies with scotch eggs, crispy calamari, a Ceaser salad and a cheese burger (all which were delicious I might add) and a few pints of beer, we decided we still had room for a little desert so we made our way back to Voodoo Doughnuts (whose motto is, “Good Things Come in Pink Boxes“).  We were absolutely sure that as it was so late and over an hour Continue reading
