Before my two most wonderful pupsters pawed their way into my life I would spend a lot of time online looking at dogs to adopt. During this time I would also find myself following different stories of bloggers relationships with their own special furry friends. Yet Of all the tails (get it TAILS) I read, there was one I found myself particularly drawn to each week and it was the loving accounts written about Buddy the Wonder Dog on cityrag.com. Buddy was part Corgi and part Chihuahua and a city dog, a rescue NYC dog at that, who belonged to the blogger behind the ever so awesome and entertaining blog cityrag.com and her partner. When the blog began in 2004, the stories and pictures of Buddy’s adventures in the city, at the beach, or just lying around just being Buddy would put a smile on my face and a warm fuzzy in my heart every time. Longing for a dog of my own, I intently followed the stories of Buddy and in some strange way I felt a connection with the Wonder Dog that went beyond just reading another blog post.
As the years past I was blessed with the opportunity to adopt not one, but two furry friends of my own, the ever so wonderful Bella and Coppertop!! Although I would still check cityrag.com from time to time to see what Buddy was up to, after a while the posts about Buddy stopped and my visits became farther and farther apart. Not that cityrag.com isn’t a great blog to stop by on your daily internet browsing, it is, they have great stuff, however what I loved the most about Cityrag.com was Buddy the Wonder Dog. I would often wonder where the little corgi/Chihuahua mix who had captured my heart so many years ago had gone, hoping for the best but fearing the worst.
Then this week I received an email from a friend of mine I had “turned on” to Buddy back in the day saying, “Buddy, the corgi form Cityrag has died.” Immediately I went though a series of emotions from sadness to wondering where the little Wonder Dog had been all these years. In a letter to the readers from the writer of cityrag.com would be where I would find the answers to my questions about Buddy. Buddy was 20 years old when he passed away this past year and up until his passing he was still living the doggy life in NYC. Posts about his daily goings on had ceased to be after his health began to decline because the writer of cityrag and owner of Buddy explained in her letter that, “Blogging can change your relationship to things and I wanted to keep it real with him. Or maybe I just didn’t want to blog his decline. Buddy was an amazing dog – sweet, funny, loyal, always up for an adventure, and a badass to the end.”
It is strange the connections we make to animals and people that we have never met but read about and follow online. Even today, as I wrote this post, I found myself often with a lump in my throat and watery eyes, needing to take breaks to keep my “work face” on. It could very well be I feel so emotional because the passing of Buddy reminds me that one day I too will have to say goodbye to my own furry friends however I think its something more. When I really think about it and look back I realize that when I first began reading about Buddy the Wonder Dog it was during a very hard time in of my life, and I was lonely and so badly wanted a dog of my own and the adventures of Buddy really brought some light and happiness into some pretty dark days. RIP Buddy the Wonder Dog, thanks for all the laughs and the smiles, you will forever be remembered in my mind as truly one badass Buddy!
